Story & Photos Mike Spicer
Cruising the lawn at the 2018 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance I was soaking in the beautiful cars curated for the show. Exquisite and beautiful it’s hard to stand out among this collection of amazing cars, and then I came across this stunning polished 1927 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Limousine.

I’ve seen big pre-war Rolls-Royce cars before. Yes they are very stately and impressive vehicles but this one stood out above the rest. Polished steel on every curve, opulence as far as the eye could see and then some. I had to learn more about this car.
Originally commissioned for the Maharaja of India they used long established English coachbuilder Windover & Co. who were especially adept at making a customer’s vision come true, meticulously constructed the car to exact specifications.
In honor of these cars the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance had two classes in the field called Motor Cars of the Raj. This Rolls-Royce Phantom I was recently restored to pristine condition and entered by His Highness Maharaja Gaj Singhji of Marwar-Jodhpur of Jodhpur, India.

The Maharajas of India were known to commission some of the most exquisite and unique cars in the world. While were lucky to catch a glimpse of these cars in photographs it’s a rare treat to see one up close in person. Needless to say this 1927 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Windovers Limousine stood out among the other cars on the Concours lawn. Truly impressive vision captured in time.
